Piers were originally built for the disembarkation of visitors by boat arriving at the newly fashionable seaside resorts in the early 19th century. Their function soon changed, however, when they developed into the seaside pleasure pieras a total of eighty-four piers were built in England, Wales and the Isle of Man.

This book covers the history of piers in Britain, with sections on the pier-building era, the architecture of amusement, piers today (1977), and two appendices: A chronological list of piers and gazetteer of surviving piers.
