Their function soon changed, however, when they developed into the seaside pleasure pieras a total of eighty-four piers were built in England, Wales and the Isle of Man.

This book covers the history of piers in Britain, with sections on the pier-building era, the architecture of amusement, piers today (1977), and two appendices: A chronological list of piers and gazetteer of surviving piers.
