One hundred years ago the Mersey was crowded with  sailing ships. The tall masts of deep sea barques and ships were to be seen in almost every dock. The picture of Queens Dock in the 1880s was typical. Hundreds of small craft, flats, schooners, gig boats, fishing trawlers, all worked under sail. Many of the growing fleet of steamers still carried full sets of sails as a sort of `belt and braces' precaution in case their engines broke down.

This publication illustrates the history of sailing ships on the Mersey over the last one hundred and fifty years. It has views of the river and the docks in the days of sail and pictures of some of the different types of vessel to be seen. It also has pictures of some of the most famous ships of the sailing ship era including the most famous of them all, the tea clipper Cutty Sark.
