St. George's Hall, Liverpool is one of the finest neoclassical civic buildings in Europe: a symbol of 19th century Liverpool's success and prosperity. It was built between 1841 and 1854 to the design of a young architect, Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, who had to combine concert hall and law court facilities in one building. This booklet outlines the building's fascinating history and construction, which includes the first attempt at air~conditioning a public building in the country, and describes the main features of its superb architecture and decoration. It is illustrated by 29 colour and 12 black and white plates.

Cover: John Goodchild's Fantasy of St. George's Hall under construction, 1854. Watercolour.
