Christine Donaldson has created a glorious range of over 20 original designs for babies up to the age of 18 months. They consist of clothes and colourful nursery accessories. The book uses a great variety of techniques some relying on hand sewing - such as English, Dresden plate and cathedral window patchwork and others which can be made by machine - log cabin, seminole and American block patchwork. Some of the projects include quilting or applique.
Originally patchwork and quilting were produced by using scraps of fabrics salvaged from garments too worn out to be of further use. Some of the early American quilts, made by pioneer women in this manner, used plain red and white calicoes and even flour sacking. Yet the patterns produced are so intricate as to transform these humble materials into little works of art. Some form of patchwork and quilting was practised by most rural societies around the world and the preparation of a tiny quilt, made of the softest and most colourful scraps of fabric collected for a long time among a group of women, would herald the birth of a child ..
PATCHWORK BABY is therefore steeped in the tradition, although in our more affluent days we are more likely to explore the remnant counter rather than the family ragbag for inspiration. A craft born of necessity and as a way to occupy long winter evenings now has to be fitted into the busy lives most women lead today. The projects included in this book have been carefully graded. Some are very simple and can be made in a short time, even by a novice, while others - the christening robe for instance - require a good deal of time and patience and a higher level of skill. But the impact of patchwork relies largeJy on the careful juxtaposition of light and dark and on the choice of colours so that even the simplest objects can be made into very special gifts.

Elsie Svennas's beautiful and novel ideas for quilting - often combined with patchwork and applique - will be a revelation to those who always thought the limit of the technique was the traditional quilted bedspread. She uses quilting to make, patch, mend ana alter clothes, and to make accessories, toys, soft furnishings and, perhaps most excitingly, pictures and wall hangings. A wealth of drawings and photographs illustrate the techniques and show what can be achieved by experimenting with textures, incorporating cherished fragments of precious material or odd scraps, with ingenuity and innovation.
Although this is not a book for beginners, and many of these ideas need a considerable degree of skill, Elsie Svennas's enthusiasm and encouragement will certainly inspire you to explore this technique further.

This practical and inspirational book examines the centuries~old craft of quilting. In recent years, quilting has tended to be regarded as simply a subsidiary skill to patchwork and appliqué. Now, an increasing number of needlewomen have recognized that quilting is a highly subtle art form, capable of producing a truly beautiful blend of pattern and texture.
After a brief look at the historical background, the author, who is a leading authority on the subject, describes the basic materials and skills that are required. She then shows to quilt by hand or machine.
Next, the intricacies of pattern and design are investigated, and Dorothy Osler shows clearly how to make both motifs and filler patterns, and how to combine them to produce a truly satisfying work of art. She finishes with a look at some of the special effects with which modern quilt artists are experimenting.
Of great value both to beginners and to those who would like to improve their skills, the book is fully illustrated in colour, with step~by~step photographs to show techniques. It also contains many examples of quilts~ traditional and modern~ that explain why quilting is now enjoying a revival of popularity.

Have you ever wanted to create a textile work of art that is both beautiful and exciting, but perhaps not known quite where to begin? Designed for quilters and embroiderers, here is a book full of imagination, information, ideas and practical step-by-step guidance on an enduring and entrancing subject.
Taking the theme of fairy tales, old and new, with their enthralling blend of magic and commonsense, slapstick humour and high romance, princesses and woodcutters, knights and dragons, a group of textile artists have let their imaginations run riot and have translated these stories into fabrics and stitches.
Starting with the initial planning and drawing stage, which is the main stumbling block for most of us, Gail Harker demonstrates, in clearly described and illustrated stages, how anyone — even a complete beginner - can achieve a beautiful and rewarding result by using the same straightforward techniques as the professionals.
In successive chapters she shows how to enhance your work by using fabric dyes and colouring techniques, steps to successful quilting and applique, automatic and free machine embroidery, how to make a textile fairy tale book, and how to finish your work.
Filled with full colour pictures of works by today's leading textile artists, this book is a pleasure to look through. It is also an invaluable work of reference for anyone wanting to create their own quilt or embroidery.

Tumbling Blocks, Delectable Mountains, Stairway to Heaven, Log Cabin, Windmill Blades, and
Other Optical Designs provide a striking illustrated survey of the magical effects of geometric design in American quilts. As intriguing to quilters as to everyone who admires good design, this 143 page book explores for the first time, the imaginative dimensions of classic optical quilt designs ~ patterns that can be 'read' in more than one way and appear to have movement and depth. Using the directions supplied, you can also create your own optical designs. Clear instructions and illustrations accompany four effervescent projects -- Eccentric Star, Tumbling blocks, 3-D fans, and Tree of Life. Illustrated with 50 colour plates and over 145 additional photographs, drawings and diagrams. 143 pages, with Bibliography.
