All brides, we know, are beautiful ...
In this book Pauline Stevenson looks at the evolution of bridal adornment through the ages and the many quaint customs that have been associated with the wedding ceremony, both in the church and after it. She spans in text and pictures the great gulf in time, outlook and behaviour between the shrinking medieval 'bride of convenience' to the emancipated marriage partner of today. She looks too at rings and cakes and trousseaux, and what used to be called bottom drawers — 'six flannel pairs (if these be worn)'.
This beautifully illustrated book will prove a delight to those who still look on weddings as a happy and civilised means of adapting the human condition.

This lively account of the development of the necktie from the 1670s to the present draws on evidence from paintings, engravings, contemporary written sources and stunning photographs of high-fashion examples of this essential element of male dress.
The tie is not only of interest for sartorial reasons, it also serves as a label, offering
an insight into the man himself. An item of dress so close to the face is always conspicuous, and therefore, either by its presence or absence, a man is automatically assessed. His taste (or lack of it) is revealed, and even his politics, education or sporting achievements can be deduced.
This book offers insights into the wearing of ties by historical characters such as Samuel Pepys, whose pride in his wardrobe is clearly indicated in his famous diary, and the legendary Regency dandy Beau Brummell. It shows how current styles have developed from earlier fashions, and features examples of contemporary ties from the elegant and stylish to the downright outrageous. Today ties seem to be more popular than ever, and designer labels compete with more and more unusual designs and materials.
Ties is an essential account not only for those with an interest in the social history of dress but also for anyone conscious of trends in men's fashion. The many, varied illustrations are drawn from contemporary sources and original designs, as well as featuring stunning photographs of ties from the V&A's world famous dress collection.

Until 1900 there was only one. In the 1930s Edward, Prince of Wales became the unwitting embodiment of two more, even though he in fact wore neither.
It was not until 1989 that a fourth was finally identified: in more than 150 years of tie wearing, only four ways to tie a tie were generally known.
But fashion's lethargy has been science's opportunity. Two Cambridge physicists, using a model based on atomic motion and a branch of mathematics — knot theory — determined to
unravel the full potential of the twists and turns of the neck tie and to free men's fashion from the tyranny of limited choice. This is the story of how they did it, how they discovered that eighty-five knots could be tied. By expressing aesthetic criteria such as symmetry and balance in mathematical terms, thirteen of the eighty-five knots could be proved to be stylish: the aesthetic knots.
They are all presented here, with diagrams and photographs, and accompanied by a history of tie tying. For the first time it is possible to choose between a Plattsburgh and an Oriental, a St. Andrews and a Nicky — as well as the already-known Windsor, half-Windsor and the ubiquitous four-in-hand. Style and science have never before combined so effortlessly to fashion the opportunities for the tie knot.

Youngest of the great coutouriers, reluctant hero of the glamourous world of fashion, Christian Lacroix was the star that the 1980s was waiting for, bringing new life to the sleeping world of haute couture. In founding his own house and launching his startling luxurious and wonderfully elegant collections. Lacroix turned all accepted wisdom on its head. Time has vindicated this shy man in love with the theatre, with literature and tradition. He is a designer whose nature is profoundly that of an artist, nourished on culture and the 'remembrance of things past' that runs like a thread through even the simplest of his dresses.

(Order reference 14987).
Originally published in 1896, this classic of ethnography was assembled by a skilled illustrator who first encountered Maori tattoo art during his military service in New Zealand. Maori tattooing (moko) consists of a complex design of marks, made in ink and incised into the skin, that communicate the bearer s genealogy, tribal affiliation, and spirituality. This well-illustrated volume summarizes all previous accounts of moko and encompasses many of Robley s own observations. He relates how moko first became known to Europeans and discusses the distinctions between men and women s moko, patterns and designs, moko in legend and song, and the practice of mokomokai: the preservation of the heads of Maori ancestors. Features 180 black-and-white illustrations.

Brilliantly coloured and intricately patterned draped garments are part of the cultural heritage of India and Pakistan. This illustrated survey of these textiles contains fine examples from public and private collections in India.
Invaluable source book, covering traditions, trading, and a section on the Paisley shawl.
Of the enormous range of textiles used in the South Asian subcontinent, for daily or ceremonial use, single lengths of uncut cloth are certainly the most versatile and the most popular In their diverse forms, they reflect the aesthetic ideals of the groups who live in this large geographical area. Evolution in style and adornment notwithstanding, the primary function of an unsewn length of cloth continues unchanged, whether as sari, shawl, waistcloth, turban, sash, spread or wrap. Draped garments worn by groups within the subcontinent were affected by influences from West and Central Asia that accompanied invasions, trade and immigrant groups before the first millennium BC. These influences may have led to the adoption of stitched garments such as trousers and jackets that were better suited to the newcomers' horse-riding culture and climate. Today the eastern and southern areas of the subcontinent continue to adhere to traditional styles of draped costume, principally the sari for women, with the loincloth (dhoti) and shoulder cloths (uttariya) for men, while the north and western regions have adopted stitched garments more widely.

Christian Dior, the legendary French fashion designer, caused a worldwide sensation in 1947, in a Paris still groping to recover from the devastations of wartime occupation. For the next thirty years the House of Dior, with its subdued and refined pearl-grey, velvet-covered walls and its grey carpeting, played host to aristocrats, stars of stage and film, and glitterati from around the world. Much of Dior's daily inspiration emanated from the world of the intellectual and artistic elite, in which he moved with such people as Eric Satie, Francis Poulenc, Henry Sauguet, Jean Cocteau, and Raoul Dufy. In addition to Dior, Marie-France Pochna guides us skilfully through the constellation of Paris high-fashion luminaries: Lanvin, Balenciaga, Lelong, Hermes, Givenchy, and Jacques Fath. Includes an Index.

From Ms Hepburn's elegant black shift to Lady Gaga's meat gown, The Dress relives the marvellous and unforgettable dresses of fashion: think Liz Hurley's safety-pin ensemble, Princess Di's never- ending wedding dress, or that unforgettable white halter sported by Marilyn in The Seven Year Itch. Megan Hess' fabulous illustrations celebrate a collection of frocks that take readers on a decadent romp through fashion history, from the haute to the hot. Hess has spent her career exploring and illustrating fashion, and though it is an ever-evolving, ever-inspiring beast, there are particular instances that shine on through the years. This is a compendium of gowns that have captured a moment in history, the spirit of a generation and the indefinable energy of a fashion icon, and an exploration of why they continue to resonate with audiences, decades on. Accompanied by historical anecdotes and revealing facts, The Dress is an elegant and immersive introduction to the moments that shaped fashion, and, in turn, our lives.

This is the first in-depth study of the Whitworth Art Gallery's acclaimed collection of clothing from post-Pharaonic Egypt, most of which was excavated between 1888 and 1923. The evolution of the shaping and cut of garments, especially tunics, cloaks and headwear, is traced from the late 3rd century, when Egypt was under Roman rule, to the 10th century, by which time it was an Arab state. The weaving and sewing skills of the era are brought into sharp focus, as well as the distinctive styles, decoration and colours of the clothes. Egypt in the first millennium AD was a rich cultural melting pot and this diversity was reflected in the dress of the people. The book is lavishly illustrated with specially-commissioned colour photographs and line drawings. Frances Pritchard is Curator (Textiles) at the Whitworth Art Gallery, The University of Manchester.

In the Art Deco period art, design, and fashion all enjoyed a surge of glorious inventiveness. Fashion, inspired from the center of haute couture in Paris, took off in revolutionary new directions. Dress could be decorated with intricate, heavily beaded embroidery, bold pictorial designs, or dramatic geometric patterns. Nothing was too exotic to be tried.
The division between fashion and art was very narrow, and well-known artists such as Raoul Dufy and Sonia Delaunay turned their skills to designing textiles for the couturiers. Colorful, eccentric figures such as Paul Poiret and Mariano Fortuny were generating ever newer and more daring ideas. Specialist embroidery houses like that of Felix Lallement were supplying magnificent hand-worked embroideries to be used in the most extravagant haute couture.
A Fashion for Extravagance gives a unique and inspiring insight into this glamorous and exciting world. Illustrated in full colour is Sara Bowman's hitherto unpublished collection of working designs and embroidery samples from the period, including many from the Maison Lallement and Poiret's special design house, the Atelier Martine. Through these rare and beautiful examples the reader can have an insider's glimpse of the artists and designers of the Art Deco period as they first experimented with the new ideas that would form the glamorous fashions of Paris in the 19I0s and I 920s.
Set alongside this collection are photographs of the fabrics and fashions designed by some of the most famous names of the period — Dufy, Poiret, Fortuny, Erte and Sonia Delaunay — and the accompanying text conjures up their distinctive, fascinating, and ephemeral world.
The book as a whole offers not merely a unique visual feast, but also many new insights into the burgeoning of Art Deco fashion design.
